FLORA AND VEGETATION:
There are up to 112 different species. Among these, in summer, the spectacular sea daffodil, the sea thistle, the European searocket, the juniper (the only place on the islands where it can be found), the sarsaparilla, the honeysuckle, and above all, the extremely rare Prat Orchid. There exist a great variety of communities. Noteworthy among these are the wild olive shrub (pine, mastic or rockrose), the wetland communities (very rare in Majorcan coastal regions), oak groves, the lavender and heather shrub and dune vegetation, above all on S’Amarador beach.
FAUNA:
Birds are the most visible group of vertebrates. Over 200 species have been catalogued, 30 of them present throughout the year. The rest come in spring to breed, or in autumn to spend the winter, such as those from the north of Europe. Species like the mallard duck; coots, black with a white beak; moorhens, with white plumage on the tail and sides; the little grebe or the marsh hen, with its scandalous cry like a pig being slaughtered. The most representative bird of prey is the marsh harrier, which lives on the marshes and builds its nest in these areas.
