The municipality of Capdepera, with the tourist resort of Cala Ratjada, can be found at the north-eastern tip of Majorca, the first place on the island to be touched by the morning sun. It has a population of 7,200 inhabitants plus the thousands of visitors who come there every year. The municipality is situated in the Llevant mountain range, characterised by low mountains and hills.

Between these lie two valleys: Vall de Sa Mesquida and Vall de Canyamel, both with areas of special natural interest, such as Cala Agulla and Cala Mesquida, where visitors can enjoy hiking and cycling in the knowledge that vehicle access is restricted.

The first known human settlements in the area date back to the Talayotic period, although the first document written in which Capdepera appears is the “Llibre dels Feyts”, according to which the name of the town has its origin in the Treaty of Cap de la pera, by virtue of which Minorca submitted to the authority of King Jaume.

Later, in the year 1300, the castle was built, designed to defend the area from attacks by the Corsairs. Finally, in 1819, Capdepera came to be considered as an independent municipality.

At the beginning of the 20th century the first tourists arrived at Capdepera and the first holiday homes were built. Today, its tourist resorts, Cala Ratjada, Font de Sa Cala, Canyamel and Cala Mesquida have a joint capacity of over 20,000 places, in addition to substantial complementary leisure facilities.

The tourist infrastructure is one of the most complete on the island. New promenades, pedestrian areas and squares with gardens give the municipality a delightful appearance.

Hotel accommodation has also been modernised, with the aim of meeting the needs of increasingly demanding customers.
